Tests for Atypical Parkinsonisms

A thorough neurological exam by a fellowship-trained neurologist who specializes in movement disorders is the best way to differentiate the atypical Parkinsonisms from true Parkinson's disease. MRI and other brain imaging studies are sometimes used to help establish the diagnosis, but cannot replace the clinical evaluation.
Full testing includes assessment of:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Gait
  • Coordination
  • Blood pressure checked when standing, seated, or lying down
