Treatment of Gait Disorders

Treatment of gait disorders focuses first on identifying any treatable causes of the problem. Once this is done, long term treatment uses a multidisciplinary approach:

  • Physical Therapy - is used to improve balance, strength, and flexibility

  • Occupational Therapy - provides strategies to assist with eating, dressing and self care

  • Education and instruction in fall prevention

At Northwestern, a treatment plan is developed by working with the Geriatric Evaluation Service as well as world renowned gait and balance clinicians at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the Northwestern Department of Human Movement Sciences.
