Physical Rehabilitation Medicine

Members of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine serve in Northwestern Memorial's Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University academic department. In addition, they are on the medical staff of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), where most rehabilitation care is provided by physiatrists and specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Diagnostic and treatment services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis and include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Communicative disorders
  • Psychology
  • Social work
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Rehabilitation engineering
  • Vocational rehabilitation

Specialized programs include:

  • Amputee
  • Arthritis
  • Brain trauma
  • Chronic pain management
  • EMG
  • Pediatrics (early intervention, brain trauma and rhizotomy)
  • Post-polio syndrome
  • Stroke
  • Sports medicine
  • General rehabilitation (including neuromuscular disorders)
  • Spinal cord injury

The Midwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury Care System is comprised of the Acute Spinal Cord Injury Center at Northwestern Memorial and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Northwestern Memorial and RIC also provide an extensive range of outpatient services, including:

  • Allied health services
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Unique resources in the areas of prosthetics/orthotics
  • Alternate communication/environmental control
  • Seating/positioning
  • Sexual dysfunction in spinal cord injured males
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Electromyography
